• Tightness is an important factor in modern exhaust systems and critical for the reduction of emissions.
• The lambda probe, for example, is an important sensor for measuring the residual oxygen concentration in catalytic emission control.
• If a leak exists, fresh air enters the exhaust tract. This causes the lambda probe to detect an excessive oxygen concentration.
• The engine management system initiates appropriate measures, but these remain ineffective because the unused oxygen in the exhaust is not a result of the combustion process.
